PORT EVERGLADES, Fla. (February 13, 2001) -- Seafarers have a new beacon in South Florida with the recent opening of the Port Everglades Operations Center & Harbormaster Tower. Overlooking every waterway within the 2,190-acre seaport, the nine-story building's modern lighthouse-like design affords the harbormaster staff a 270-degree view of Port Everglades and its surrounding communities. The $8 million building is topped with a 75-foot high communications monopole, which will be equipped with state-of-the-art security cameras, navigational and weather monitoring devices. At Port Everglades, the Harbormaster's office serves as a "one-stop" information source for the seaport's customers by providing real-time information on ship scheduling, berthing, traffic flow, etc. The Operations Center & Harbormaster Tower is constructed atop the Midport Parking Garage, which has been expanded to include three additional floors that will double the number of parking spaces from 1,000 to 2,000. The design team for the building is DeRose & Slopey Consulting Engineers, Inc. and the architectural firm is Scharf & Associates, Inc. Danville-Findorff, Inc. is the construction team.
